In the tool chest I have a range of antique tools which is allinclusive enough for me to be able to take squared off, straight pieces of wood, make them into chair components and then make them into a chair. I will discuss the contents of the chest in a combine of chapters, but the problem at the occasion is how to produce the straight pieces of wood! We take this for granted just visit the timber yard or run a piece over the planer and it's done. In this project, where I have left modern conveniences behind, this is the most difficult bit. I've reduced the tree to manageable pieces and taken them back to the shed on a wheelbarrow. What next?

I have to start drying this wood now as it is still full of sap and must be given time to lose its moisture, shrink and move. How long does this take? It depends how thick it is and where it is kept while drying. There is a rule of thumb, which says to allow one year for every inch of thickness.

First I intend to slice, split and saw out these components, slightly large to allow for shrinkage and movement, and air dry them for a few months. I'll check them for moisture content. Then, stack them in the house somewhere for a month or so to put in order them for central heating and domesticity.

One thing that is well worth doing while cut timber is drying in the yard is to paint the ends. There is a liquid wax preparation which we use for this job but you can just as well slap on a coat of oil-based paint. This is to prevent end splits, which can invent while the wood dries out. By concentrating on using quarter sawn components, I am using wood that is stable, that is, it shouldn't distort in drying. The first job was to place a pair of the "manageable pieces" side by side on the ground, forming a notch for holding the other pieces while splitting and working on them. The subdivision was an additional one job for the wedges, something that was turning out to be relatively easy.

I particularly want to get the back legs roughed out at this stage as they are the longest components.

I opt pieces that are reasonably straight grained, because they will be easier to work, but take pieces from a bend in the tree because they correspond with the shape of the template - less work when it comes to sawing them. I wonder if the shape of the back legs; typical of this chair design, industrialized from similar thinking long ago. Look at my photos and you'll see what I mean. This is a very strong chair anyway but if the back legs are shaped to ensue the grain of the tree they will be stronger still, as well as production the job easier. By the way, I don't think this invent goes back a mere combine of hundred years, I think it is a synthesis of many chairs appealing many unknown makers.

My respect for the ancients was about to growth as I began to tackle the adze.
I wanted to flatten one outside of each piece and I sharpened up the adze. I knew by now that heroic feats of sawing were on the program if I was going to get components to regular thicknesses, but using a flattened outside as datum was important in order to judge where to saw.

I had never used an adze before and if I'd been asked what would be the most thorough verb for 'adzing', I would have guessed swing - unmistakably you 'swing' an adze?
Now I would say 'chip' and I would also say that 'adzemen' (what else would they be called?) have a extra kind of strength. Try chipping away for half an hour and you'll see what I mean. I intend to try more of it - especially the short handled adze for bowl production etc - but not until these components are sawn.

I concept I would try a accepted rip saw for ripping this down. There's a rip saw in the tool chest and I have one in my own toolbox but I haven't done much serious ripping until now. Both of these saws had been sent away for sharpening, but neither was much use for this kind of 'extreme' sawing; one was determined to cut squint and the other had a incommunicable 'stop' in the middle of it's blade beyond which it would not cut.
I decided there and then to do my own sharpening in time to come - Mr Wake, the original tool chest owner, had done his own sharpening; the setting tools and files were in the box.

So I tried a bow saw. See the movie clips on the Wood-shop website - Mr Wake must have had a bow saw as there is a blade for a small bow saw in the tool chest. I found that the bow saw was inclined to leave the straight and narrow as well...

Wedges are important for holding the kerf from closing. As usual with hand tools the main problem is with holding the stock while cutting it. I had to chisel out notches for the clamps to give them a good purchase. I found that clamping it to the side of an old gate; two clamps, one at the top and one at ground level worked better than I had expected.

It was the "Great American" Disston which saved the day. I sharpened and waxed it and away we went. This is a cross-cut saw, but cross-cut saws can be used for ripping when the reverse is not the case.

One thing that is worth saying in defence of the accepted rip saws is that they cut most efficiently when the teeth are at 45 degrees to the outside of the material, so the stock should be lying horizontally for the spoton sawing angle. I found it most convenient to have the stock standing vertically and this fitted in fine with the Disston.

I ready far more wood for components than important in order to allow for wastage and experimentation later on. I piled the materials up on battens under a makeshift roof to safe them from rain and sun for a few months. The roof was made generally from old pallets - driftwood, of course.

For years, no matter what method I used, my sharpening efforts were a disappointment. Then I tried high-quality sandpaper as the sharpening medium, used with an angle jig. To my surprise and delight, the process proved to be remarkably quick, easy, and effective. After switching to sandpaper sharpening, I experimented until I found the technique that worked best. I now use high-quality sandpaper that has a remarkably consistent grit size and an adhesive backing that secures it solidly to the glass. That way, as I sharpen, the paper doesn't push up in front of the cutting edge and convert the sharpening angle. And I add three microbevels, which gets me through the three successive grits of sandpaper more quickly.

The sandpaper must be mounted to a flat surface. I use thorough window glass. It's inexpensive, ready at any glass shop, and more than flat enough. Because my sharpening policy requires three distinct sandpaper grits, I use three pieces of glass, each measuring 5mm thick by 6 in. Wide by 16 in. Long. A glass shop will cut them to size for you. For safety's sake, take a few minutes when you get them home to flat the sharp edges with sandpaper.

To expand and safe the glass, glue it to a backer board. I use 4-in. Thick hardboard (Masonite), but plywood also works. I use a glue called Weldbond, but I think that any glue that bonds wood and glass will work. Apply a thin coat of glue to each mating surface, then place the glass on the backer. A few pieces of masking tape prevent the glass from sliding, and a stack of books on top holds it down.

The most important part of my ideas is high-quality adhesive-backed sandpaper. I use microfinishing sheet abrasives made by 3M, compared to quarterly sandpaper, the grits on this 3M stock are more uniform in size. That means you are less likely to get unwanted deeper scratches from an occasional oversized grit in your paper. Plus, because the sandpaper mounts firmly on glass, the abrasive stays flat. I use three grits-15 micron, 5 micron, and 0.3 micron-one for each piece of glass.

It's important to apply the paper carefully. Any dirt or air bubble can leave a bump, and even a tiny bump can nick the edge of a tool or catch an edge while sharpening and tear the paper. Before adding the paper, wash the glass with soap and water to remove odd pieces of dirt or sawdust.

Cut the sheet abrasive in half lengthwise and remove the backing paper. Wash your hands with just a puny soap on them (not too wet) and rub your hand on the glass to dampen the surface. If you tilt the glass and water runs off, it is too wet. Add the paper carefully to avoid trapping air bubbles in the middle of the glass and the paper. Place one end of the paper on one end of the glass, lowering the paper until you reach the other end. The soapy water will prevent the adhesive backing from adhering immediately, so you can slide the paper nearby until it's centered. The water will dry through the paper in short order. No matter how small they might be, roll or push out any air bubbles.

Because I use microbevels, I must hold the cutting edge at a consistent angle every time. I've long been partial to my shopmade jig, but of late, I've also learned to like the Veritas Mk.Ii jig. The Mk.U accepts most plane blades and bench chisels, and allows me to manufacture three microbevels quickly.

Before you start honing, grind a fresh 25° customary bevel on the blade. When grinding, make sure the edge ends up quadrate to the chisel or blade. After the edge is ground, set the Mk.Ii to 30° and mount the blade or chisel. Make sure the knob on the eccentric roller is in the 12 o'clock position. Then, put a puny baby oil or mineral oil on the 15-micron abrasive. As you sharpen, the steel that's removed will end up as tiny filings. You'll want sufficient oil to float the filings out of the abrasive so that the blade can push them along the sheet for a natural cleaning action. When you're finished, you can clean up the excess oil with a paper towel.

To start, rest the edge of the blade in the oil and pull back first (this prevents paper rips if there is a incommunicable bump or bubble at the edge), then forward and backward a few times with light pressure. Keep the roller of the jig off the sandpaper. Check the bevel after no more than a join dozen strokes. You should see a new bevel forming at the edge. Typically, it need be only about one-tenth the width of the 250 customary bevel.

Now, convert the angle of the jig from 30° to roughly 31°. That's done plainly by turning the knob on the jig's eccentric roller to the 3 o'clock position. Repeat the honing steps with the S-micron grit. I normally spend no more than 30 seconds at that grit.

Finally, convert the angle of the jig from 31 ° to roughly 32° by turning the eccentric roller knob to about the 6 o'clock position. Repeat the honing process with the 0.3-micron grit. You should need only a dozen or so strokes to add this final microbevel.

A t this point, you will have a burr o n the back of the blade or chisel. To remove the burr, flip the jig and hold the back side of the blade or chisel flat against the 0.3-micron paper. Slide the blade back and forth a few times until the burr breaks free.

That's it. The edge will be razor sharp and ready to go to work. When it begins to dull, place it back in the jig and redone it, always working through all three grits. If your jig is already set up, you can faultless a rehoning in less than two minutes.

8- Talk to your client throughout the surgery. Keep request them what they feel and tell them what you feel yourself.

9- Keep the performance going until you feel you have wholly removed, cleaned or unblocked the problem

To make sure this is working, you must be convinced that the surgical operation will work otherwise you are wasting your time. You must visualise without doubting and "know" the person is going to get better. Keep repeating to yourself many times something like "the tumour is melting" or "this xxxx is disappearing" and believe it.

The above has brought miracle cures to many of my clients. Having said this, unless the cause of a problem is removed, the problem may keep coming back. This is the topic of someone else one of my articles on "Cancer - Causes of disease".

Bare Hand Surgery, as practised in the Philippines, explained

Basically, a Bare Hand Surgeon enters a person's body using his / her Bare Hands and manually removes diseased or dead tissues, tumours, power blockages, calcium deposits and other matters that should not be there. This is done without inflicting any pain, coming out without leaving any graphic marks or scars.

I have personally been visiting Bare Hand Surgeons with groups in the Philippines since 1997 and I have witnessed thousands of these surgeries. I have worked with over 30 surgeons but I have only kept 3 which, I believe, are genuine. All the others were either cheating or were unethical.

Psychic surgical operation is impossible some say? Yes, but only agreeing to contemporary scientific standards. I do not understand how telepathy works but I accept it. The Fbi and Scotland Yard use mediums to trace criminals and the success rate with some medium is high. This is not very scientific but it works. "Remote viewers" have been shown many times on Tv and it was proved that these people could see through the eyes of someone else person who was miles away. How does this all work? It does not matter. What is foremost is that it works.

"What conditions can be treated?

The following only represents a few examples of conditions I have personally seen treated by the Bare Hand Surgeons I have visited:

* several years ago, Bare Hand surgical operation was successfully performed on a friend of mine suffering from Parkinson's disease. This successfully stopped the progression of the disease for many years (this gentleman never worked on the cause and the problem finally came back).

* Recently, a Psychic surgeon cleared "growths" from colse to my prostate. He then left a Kleenex tissue inside my body overnight to prevent the seeping of blood back in the testicles (I could feel the tissue by pressing on the point where it was inserted).

* I had a 12" tumour removed from my large intestines. I was eating a normal meal half an hour latter.

* A member of our group had her ovaries and fallopian tubes "cleaned" .

* The eyes of a person suffering from cataract where "cleaned"

* One member of our group had growths that were attached to her spine removed. This lady had had problems thoughprovoking her head fully and had suffered from persisting pains in her shoulders for many years. The instant revising to the head was clear and her shoulder pains have now wholly disappeared. Months of corporal therapy had previously had very minute impact.

* I witnessed two different Bare Hand Surgeons successfully take off deep brain tumours from two different patients.

* someone else Bare Hand Surgeon cleared a "goitre" from a gentleman's throat

* One surgeon removed numerous tumours from a patient's reproductive organs who was suffering from final cancer. This person is now feeling alright

* One surgeon cleaned the arteries of a outpatient colse to his heart

etc.. Etc.. The list is too long to mention.

Basically, Bare Hand Surgeons do not specialise in any exact disease. They work with "energy" on everything presented to them (as long as their guides allow it).

Is there any warrant of success?

There is no implied or explicit warrant by ethical healers or myself for this form of Alternative Therapies.

Is Bare Hand surgical operation fake or real?

Each time a film is shown on Bare Hand Surgery, it portrays the course as being some act of magic. The thoughprovoking thing is that the people who perform the magic, or those who ask them to perform it, have never been to the Philippines and have never witnessed the surgical operation themselves. They ridicule something they have never seen because they don't understand it.

Testing the Bare Hand Surgery

To test a "surgeons" who claims to be a Bare Hand Surgeon, I set up the following test for them.

1- They must work with short sleeve shirts

2- They have to work on a couch or bed I have first inspected to make sure nothing was hidden

3- They must show me their hands just before the surgical operation and start operating without touching anything

If they can still originate blood and matters from inside the body, they have past my first test

The other tests come with the working on clients over a duration of time and the saving of the client.

I have been personally allowed to feel a person's tumour rolling under my fingers before the surgery. After the surgical operation was performed, the tumour was no longer there. Other members of my group felt the same.

Finally, when I take a group to the Philippines, my students are able to film the surgery. The surgeon is then surrounded by camera from the right, the left, the front, the back and sometimes even from above if somebody dares climb on a chair to film. Since 1997, and thousands of surgical operation later, nobody in my group has ever caught one of the surgeon I visit cheating.

To me, a few Bare Hand Surgeons in the Philippines are genuine and many are fake.
